We will not be using the traditional textbook approach to science. Audrey will be creating her own science journals inspired by the Waldorf method's main lesson books. She will make her own "textbooks" with her own writing and illustrations. At the end of the school year she will have a very meaningful record of what she has learned. She will really enjoy looking back at her science books too. Her first journal, Exploring My World: Trees, will be followed by other journals like Exploring My World: Weather and Seasons and Exploring My World: Sun, Moon, and Stars.
For the past few days, Audrey has been working on her first entries into her tree journal. She is finding different kinds of trees, observing them, drawing them with her beeswax crayons, taking leaf and bark rubbings, and labeling them. She is also pressing their leaves and will tape them to the pages of her journal. This type of project is so perfect for Audrey because she is creating something of her very own from her learning. She is able to use art to further develop her understanding, and she "feels" like a real scientist out in the field!
