We spent the 4th of July at the farm, our friends' family farm. We did this last year too. The kids loved playing with all the farm animals; the sheep, cows, chickens, kittens, and a spunky little dog named Buttons. They jumped and climbed on the huge bales of hay. We ate a potluck dinner with hot dogs fresh off the grill, and we brought one of the desserts, our Flag Cake, which was the best one I've made so far! The kids also swam in the pool, did all sorts of fun fireworks, and lit sparklers. The most anticipated part of the day was the fireworks show that our friends' family puts on every year. They put on the best fireworks show that we have ever seen. So many fireworks, so big, and so close-up!
Happy Independence Day!

We celebrated the first day of summer with our Summer Sun Celebration. We baked sun bread, roasted marshmallows over the fire, and made S'mores. Audrey and Ethan were allowed to stay up as late as the sun on this special night too! And the sun stays up very late here in South Dakota on the longest day of the year!
Here are a couple of other summer sun projects we did to celebrate the first day of summer. Audrey wet felted yellow and red wool to make her very own homemade felt. She used this for the center of her sun necklace. Then she sewed it to the orange felt while adding little beads for extra sparkle. Audrey also created suns out of clay and painted them. All of our summer sun projects went very well with our story for the week; The Sun Egg by Elsa Beskow.
We made sun play dough to celebrate the first day of summer. We used our usual play dough recipe but added yellow Jello mix to one batch and orange Jello mix to the other. The play dough smelled very sweet and summery. Then we got creative with glitter, sequins, beads, and straws. Ethan even made his very own sun!
I decided to start a homeschool co-op this summer. My hope is that everyone will enjoy it so much that we will continue it on through the school year. So far, Audrey has made many new friends and has become even closer friends with the kids she already knew. There just so happens to be a lot of 6-8 year old girls. Ethan has become good friends with many of the younger siblings. There just so happens to be many little brothers in our group as well. He prefers running around the playground to doing the activities...which is just fine with me.
This was our second meeting. To celebrate the first day of summer, we read The Sun Egg by Elsa Beskow, made sun weavings, created wet-on-wet watercolor sun paintings, and played at the park. Audrey loved the arts and crafts work. Ethan loved playing in the sand the most of all. To celebrate the coming of the first day of summer, we began with these summer sun glitter watercolor paintings. Audrey and Ethan enjoyed painting them very much. Now the paintings are hanging above our nature table. They are so bright, shiny, and sunny!
We have had so much rain so far this summer! The kids have had a blast running and jumping in the puddles, floating sticks, and just dancing in the rain. Two days in a row, were particularly rainy. In fact, it rained so much on those two days, we had a "lake" right next to our house. At least, that is what Audrey and Ethan called it. And it was such a big puddle that it truly looked like a pond. So, we all had some fun running and splashing in our "lake". It was even bigger than it looks in pictures.
Very early in the morning on Father's Day, Audrey and Ethan helped me make a special breakfast in bed for Daddy. Ethan helped make the pancakes while Audrey decorated the sign. After Daddy slept in for a little while, we paraded into the room with the sign and pancake breakfast on a tray, singing "Happy Father's Day, Daddy!"
